TechFarms Capital rebrands as GAIN Venture Capital

TechFarms Capital, whose portfolio companies include several that got their starts at the TechFarms business incubator, has rebranded and is now GAIN Venture Capital. The move coincides with the kickoff of GAIN VC Fund II, a capital-raise initiative seeking $25 million in commitments.

GAIN VC seeks to amplify companies from “signal” to scale by investing in AI-enabled hardware such as IoT, sensors, robotics, drones and dual-use (military and civilian) technologies. The firm seeks to invest in early-stage founders, provided there is a clear signal that the company is addressing a problem and is ready to scale.

A qualifying signal ideally will include intellectual property that can be safeguarded; an identified acute market need; a functional prototype and manufacturing pathway; and early commercial traffic as evidenced by revenue, letters of intent or the like.

The human element, too, is a critically important consideration, GAIN VC partner Mort O’Sullivan told a gathering of prospective investors at TechFarms in Panama City Beach. He referred to a founder’s character and demonstrated capacity to successfully take ideas to market.

GAIN VC’s sweet spot is the point where software meets the tangible, resulting in tech-enabled hardware. When the fit is right, the firm is equipped to assist founders with prototyping, early manufacturing, and advice related to legal issues, marketing and supply chains.

General partner Kelly Reeser noted that a shift in typical investment allocations may favor GAIN VC. Increasingly, investment mixes include private market assets, a reflection of the evolving nature of the global economy and the need to hedge against public market volatility.

Reeser noted another advantage held by GAIN VC.

“We are the only venture capital firm in the Florida Panhandle — and it helps to be local.”
